Cranium

Cranium

I love reviewing games because studies have shown that families that play games together have happier home lives as well as more open lines of communication. Today’s game is Cranium, one of my personal favorites. Cranium is one game with 14 different activities included so that there is something for everyone in the family. Cranium is recommended for children 13yrs and over though so it is definitely not a game for those of you with younger children. The reason that Cranium is recommended for older children is because it takes a lot of thinking and interactivity that yuonger children are not yet able to take part in. Cranium is a team game

which involves one individual in the team taking their turn at acting out, drawing, humming, sculpting from clay, the clue that is on their clue card. The Cranium game comes with the game board, 600 Carnium cards including many different subjects, a ten sided Cranium dice, a tub of Cranium clay, a timer, drawing pads, pencils and four Cranium pieces. Cranium was named the 2001 toy of the year by the Toy Industry Association so it’s definitely not a new game but I have to say that it’s one of the best games i’ve played in my time!

Cranium is one of those games like Monopoly that you can find in just about any retail store anywhere, but as always if you can’t find it you can pick up a game from Amazon.com!

    Treasure Hunters from Haba

    Treasure Hunters from Haba

Today’s toy review in inspired by the beachiness of summer! As a child I ALWAYS collected shells and just about anything shiny I could find on the beaches but the problems that came with shell collecting were many. Firstly there’s the "where do I put them all?" then there’s the "ouch I cut myself on a particularly sharp shell" and the "oh gross what did I just pick up?" which is exactly why I LOVE the Treasure Hunters toy from Haba. The Treasure Hunter is a netted bag secured to a plastic top with a string attached to the top. Children can pull the treasure hunter by the string along the beach and gather lots of great shells and shiny things by simply

dragging, no touching involved and since the bag is netted the sand and cigarette butts (YUCK!) go right through the holes and your child doesn’t end up with a bag full of trash at the end of the day! The Treasure Hunter is also a great toy for indoor play on rainy days as it comes with a set of 10 coins , an hour glass and instructions on how to play indoor treasure hunter which consists of racing to see who gets the most treasure in their basket! Treasure hunter is designed for children aged 3ys+ and the basket measures 11"W x 9" H.

Treasure Hunters by Haba is next to impossible to find in local retail stores; however, you can find it at Oompa.com !

      Library Risk Game Set

      July 7th, 2008 by admin
      Library Risk Game Set

I rarely feature toys and games just for older children and I rarely choose items that are big brand name toys; however, this one is a classic and one of my favorites. Risk is a great game for family game nights when you have older children in the house, the game is recommended for children aged 10yrs+ and because of the strategy that goes in to playing the game I can’t say that it is advisable to attempt a game with anyone younger. Risk is a strategic military based game for 2-4 players and teaches children not only about the geography of the world but also about the importance of good sportsmanship as well as implementing strategy. The idea of Risk is

world domination, by occupying countries with your "troops" and rolling the dice to attack and conquer other neighboring countries occupied by other players. Each player is furnished with a card at the beginning of the game with their "mission" and the first player to succeed in their mission is the winner. The only thing you should know about Risk is that it is a LONG game, plan on playing for at least two hours - yet another reason why younger players don’t do well with this game.

Risk is available practically anywhere that you can find games; however, picking it up from your local Target and getting the bookshelf version will save you a buck or two, failing that you can order it from Target via Amazon!

Sleepy Princess and the Pea from Haba

        July 1st, 2008 by admin
Sleepy Princess and the Pea from Haba

The Sleepy Princess and the Pea game from Haba is not only a fun game but it’s the cutest game i’ve ever seen. This game, based on the story of the Princess and the Pea, is a slow paced game that is ideal for the younger members of the family but it is also a fun and unique game. The object of the game is to roll the dice and depending on what square you land on you have to take off or add a piece of the bed set to your own bed. The game comes with four individual bedsets so everyone has their own (4 players max). The aim of the bed building is to be the first player to get all of their pieces on their bed set without it falling over! The game comes with

1 princess piece that is moved around the board by each player on their turn, 1 pea, 4 bed sets, 1 game board, 1 dice and game instructions. This game also has an advanced version included in the instructions for slightly older children who are easily bored by the basic version of the game. The game is recommended for children ages 3yrs+.

The Sleepy Princess and the Pea is available from a few online retailers including Amazon.com; however, I have not yet seen it available in retail stores but if you are going to try and locate this one in your local retail stores I recommend trying the smaller specialty toy shops first!

          Stacking Animals Game from Haba

          June 27th, 2008 by admin
          Stacking Animals Game from Haba

Blocks and building toys are always a big hit with both little boys and girls but the problem with blocks is that there are few ways to recreate blocks and make them in to something new and different. Haba has come up with stacking animals to replace those traditional square blocks and they have really brought something new to the table. These great wooden animals consist of penguins, snakes, sheep, monkeys, alligators and more! These colorful stacking animals are not only great for building and stacking but they are also helpful in learning colors and animals and they’re perfect for little hands! These blocks actually come as part of a

stacking pyramid game; however they are also great when used as just building toys! The stacking game is recommended for 2-4 players and from ages 4yrs and up because of the size of some of the smaller pieces. This fun game designed by Klaus Miltenberger contains 29 wooden animals, on dice and a set of instructions on how to play the game!

The stacking animals game from Haba is available from OOmpa.com for just under $18. I haven’t been able to find this one anywhere else as of yet; although I have located a few knock offs at various online retailers.
