Language Development

My First Spanish Word Book

Learning multiple languages as a child isn’t as hard as it is when you’re fully grown as i’ve mentioned before and although auditory learning and visual learning combined is one of the better ways to go about teaching multiple languages I do believe that learning through reading is also a wonderful way to teach your child how to be multi-lingual. The "My First Spanish Word Book" is a great way to get started teaching your child Spanish when they already know English words as well as when they don’t. This book teaches with diagrams and pictures pointing to the appropriate picture and giving the word for that picture in both Spanish and English. The great

thing about this book in particular is that it can be used to teach children who already know English, children who don’t know English or Spanish or even Spanish speaking children who are trying to learn English! The book is divided in to multiple sections which are labeled in both English and Spanish with headers such as "All About Me" (Todo Sobre Mi) and "At Home" (En Casa). This book is recommended for children ages 4-8yrs; however, with parental supervision it

You can find the "My First Spanish Word Book" over at Amazon, you may be able to find similar products in local bookstores, i’m not particularly sure if you’ll be able to find this book in particular but you will be able to order it for delivery to your local big name bookstore free of charge.

Fisher-Price Smart Cycle

Today I break from the usual of bringing you unusual and new toys to bring something that’s been around for a little while but continues to amaze me. The Fisher-Price Smart Cycle is an amazing video gaming unit for younger children consisting of a "smart cycle" that hooks up to your television and uses unique software and games to teach your children more about the world around them as well as to give your child more exercise. The reason I absolutely love this toy is because it gets kids active instead of sitting them down in front of a gaming unit. The smart cycle system allows you child to customize their own bike as well as explore

different "themes". Different games for the Smart Cycle incorporate popular characters such as Sponge Bob and Dora the explorer to teach concepts such as letters, numbers, colors and shapes. The cycle comes with Learning Journey software; however, character based games are sold seperately for about $20 each. The Smart Cycle is recommended for children aged 3-6yrs and measures 9" x 16.9" x 35" and weighs 19.9lbs.

Because the Smart Cycle is made by Fisher Price you will be able to find it just about anywhere you go looking for it, Amazon and Walmart carry the Smart Cycle for $86.88, Target tacks on an extra $13.

Talk About Your Day

The importance of teaching expressive language skills is beyond explanation especially to families with an autistic child. The "Talk About Your Day" flashcards are developed by Carson Dellosa and feature 46 photographic flashcards in a deck. These flashcards all feature photos of children engaging in different activities that most children take part in at some point in their childhood. The importance of using photographic cards as opposed to paintings or drawings is that it enables your child to relate more to the cards being that that too recognize that they are children, this is an extremely important factor for children with

special needs and gives them an edge on learning new vocabulary words to describe their day or at least allows them to show their day in pictures whereas they otherwise may not express anything at all. These cards are an excellent tool for discussion and conversation among the family, allowing even your youngest members of the family to feel like a part of the conversation. Each of the 46 flashcards measures 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".

These flashcards are carried by Kaplan Early Learning Center and most of the time they need to be ordered through an online retailer. I encourage you to do a little price researching online but as always I found the best deal at Amazon.com.
