Plasma Dragons Prongrowl
Plasma Dragons Prongrowl Plasma Dragons Prongrowl
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 6 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

Mega Bloks has recently started to join the trend of collectible toys such as Pokemon and it’s step in to this realm consists of the collectible dragon series. The Plasma dragons are recommended for children of 6 yrs or older. The dragons collection and playsets include the Plasma collectibles (such as the one I purchased), Warrior figures, Battlefield playsets, Armor Dragons, Various towers and scenic pieces, Boats, Castles and various other pieces which compose a large playset which emulates a medieval world.

The Plasma Dragons come in cardboard packaging with a plastic shell. Within the plastic packaging the actual dragon is encased in a hard plastic shell. This hard plastic shell is covered in a jelly type casing which peels away enabling the plastic shell to break in to two pieces (it will click back together at anytime). Inside the shell you will find eight small plastic pieces, these pieces fit together to form your dragon. The dragon is put together using a ball and socket method and a referral diagram is provided on the back of a mini poster of the dragon. Inside the packaging you will also find a “collectors card” of the dragon, this collectors card tears away on perforated lines. There are 33 collectible pieces in the “plasma” collectibles sets which are divided by “series,” of which there are currently five. The sets are not all dragons, there are also dinosaur pieces and plasma “tech” pieces (which are robots).

Review:

The plasma dragons Prongrowl figure was affordable, it cost $4.99 which makes it an ideal toy for a child as we all know the expensive toys get treated the exact same way as the more affordable ones it’s just that the more affordable ones pack less of a punch when they go missing or get destroyed. Some toys; however, are not worth the $4.99 and your money would be better spent elsewhere. I admit that when I purchase the dragon itself I was intrigued by the packaging, I was under the impression that inside my jelly covered egg I would find a small collectors figure…instead I was faced with a handful of pieces that I had to contruct. Before I even get to this point let me just draw your attention to the packaging on this particular dragon. On the top right of the cardboard backing you will see a roaring dragon, a replica of “Prongrowl,” it was not until I got home with my figure and actually looked at the packaging that I noticed the phallic image that they would have you believe is the dragon’s leg. After seeing a penis on the cover of the toy I called in my better half to have him look at the packaging to make sure I was not seeing things…no, indeed he also saw a penis on the packaging of my newest toy. It seems that someone over at Megabloks neglected to fully draw Prongrowl’s leg on his packaging; else, they were trying to see how long it would take for the reference to get noticed. Anyway, enough about the packaging, let’s move on to the toy itself.

The dragon pieces are small, so although they are listed as waterproof (which they would be) I don’t recommend that they be used in the bathtub because pieces can get lost; however, dropping it in a sink full of water is not going to destroy the toy. The egg container that the toy pieces come in is handy for carrying around the dragon pieces in but it is unlikely that your child is going to carry pieces of a toy as opposed to the constructed toy. Piecing the toy together was frustrating, the joints consist of ball and socket joints to enable the limbs of the dragon to move. These sockets make the pieces pretty hard to put together and pretty easy to fall apart after the toy has been constructed.

Once the dragon has been fully constructed it is small enough that it fits in the palm of an adult hand, the entertainment value is limited to your child’s imagination as the toy is limited only to limb movement. Mega Bloks did add a bonus factor in to playing with these collectibles though, they made pieces interchangeable so should your child have two or three of these dragons she would be able to mix and match pieces in order to make a new dragon of her own. All in all the toy seems to fit in to recent toy trends making it a hot toy; however, I see more entertainment value, less frustration in assembly and more longevity in other toys in this price range.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
Likely to become old very quickly, small pieces and frustrating construction make it a low fun factor but inter-changeable pieces, the genre of the toy and imaginative play possibilities give this toy a fun rating of 2/5.
Ease of Assembly: Pretty difficult to snap pieces together and construction is hard to complete without referring to the provided diagram.
Price: $4.99
Packaging: Cardboard backing with plastic egg glued to the front and back, easy to open but not reusable.
Packaging Opening: Easy
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
The reusable egg case for the toy parts is more likely to become a missile as opposed to the pieces of the dragon or the constructed dragon. There is little chance of being hurt or damage on impact from this toy.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
Although this toy is for an older child the frustration level is still high because of the tendancy for limbs to pop apart and be hard to “click” back together.
Durability: Toy Durability
The construction of this toy is such that it is easy for pieces to come off the toy and become lost regularly.
Educational: Fine Motor Skills

Mr. Potato Head
Mr. Potato Head Mr. Potato Head
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 2 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

Mr. Potato Head is an all time classic toy and one that just never gets old. Although this toy seems basic compared to many of the toys on the market these days Mr. Potato Head will always be a welcomed toy to any home.Mr Potato Head comes in a clear plastic box reinforced with colorful printed cardboard and a red plastic handle on the top for easy carrying. Inside the box is a Mr. Potato Head body and various accessories, these accessories include: two pink ears, two white arms, one blue pair of feet, one white toothy smile, one brown moustache, one white pair of eyes, one yellow pair of glasses, one red nose and one green baseball hat. The Mr. Potato Head body also has a small compartment in the back to store any Mr. Potato Head accessories that your child is not using.

The basic Mr. Potato Head comes with quite a few accessories; however, there are also tons of other accessories on the market for Mr. Potato Head (including a Mrs. Potato Head.) Among the various Mr. Potato Head accessory sets which are available for purchase for around $3.99 each as an addition to the basic Mr. Potato Head toy are: Alien Spud, Birthday Spud, Construction Worker Spud, Firefighter Spud, Glamour Spud, Halloween Spud, King Spud, Mermaid Spud, Party Spud, Pirate Spud, Princess Spud, Safari Spud, Santa Spud, Sassy Spud, and Superstar Spud. A Silly Suitcase is also available for any where between $7.50 from Amazon.com to $14.99 at most other retailers, this Silly Suitcase is a jumbo accessory set for any Mr. Potato Head.

As well as the various accessory sets that are available for Mr. Potato Head, there are also various Mr. Potato Head dolls available for around $9.99 including a Spiderman Spud, a Star Trooper Spud, a Pirate Spud, a Mr and Mrs. Potato Head set, an Optimus Prime Spud, an R2D2 Spud, a Darth Vader Spud, a Mrs. Potato Head and a Trick or Treat Spud. There is also a suitcase which includes three Spud Buds for $9.99 which comes with a Carrot, an ear of Corn and a Mr. Potato Head all of which fit with the Mr. Potato Head accessories but also come with a bunch of accessories of their own.

Review:

The packaging on the basic Mr. Potato Head was great, not only was it easy to open but it’s also easy to repack and carry around thanks to the small red plastic handle. There is only one “pesky” tab to ensure the lid on your box stays closed and your accessories don’t fall out, and the box itself is sturdy enough for repeated use to store the Mr. Potato Head and his accessories. The plastic of the box is hard enough to store Mr. Potato Head but there are no sharp edges for your child to cut themselves with despite the durability of the plastic itself, all of the edges are rounded which I believe was done with much foresight on the part of Playskool. As for the toy itself, although the basic Mr. Potato Head comes with quite a few accessories there are only really enough for your child to make one Mr. Potato Head. While one Mr. Potato Head is fun to play with and there is a possibility of creating one Mr. Potato Head with or without a moustache, with or without glasses etc. I highly recommend investing the money in to the Silly Suitcase to really make this toy worth while.A plus to the Mr. Potato Head toy is that it is a waterproof toy and can be used in the bathtub, we do not, however, recommend that this toy be used as a travel toy. Mr. Potato Head would not make a good travel toy for the obvious reason that there are too many small parts that can be dropped or lost along the trip. One of the only other hangups I have with the Mr. Potato Head toy is the age recommendation. Mr. Potato Head is recommended for children ages 2+ and while I feel that this toy is age appropriate playwise I do not feel it is age appropriate for unsupervised play. When taking in to account the size of the various accessories on Mr. Potato Head…namely his eyes and ears, they are potential choking hazards for young children in unsupervised play. As far as toy construction the only other real hazard with Mr. Potato Head is the launch factor, should the body of Mr. Potato Head be thrown in a tantrum it will hurt whoever is on the receiving end!

Overall Mr. Potato Head receives a rating of 4/5 for being a classic toy with infinite potention for play because of the numerous AFFORDABLE accessory kits that are offered by Playskool.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
The fun factor on this toy is endless because of the infinite amount of combinations of accessories available for such a low price.
Ease of Assembly: Extremely easy to piece together with the exception of the moustache which needs to be hooked behind the nose piece.
Price: $5.99
Packaging: Plastic / cardboard backing combination with a plastic handle for carrying. Durable for repeat use and easy to open.
Packaging Opening: Easy
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
The body of this toy has a high chance of being thrown in a tantrum and will hurt and potentially damage on impact.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
There little to no frustration level with this toy.
Durability: Toy Durability
This toy is pretty durable, both the body of the toy and the accessories included in the box. Accessories could be damaged by biting or they could be lost pretty easily but overall durability is good.
Educational: Teaches coordination in fitting the accessories on to the toy, also teaches children bodily features and locations, and differences in individuals ie: glasses, moustaches.

Bratz Lil' Angelz
Bratz Lil' Angelz Bratz Lil' Angelz
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 4 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

Bratz are the newest craze in the doll world and have taken the world of girls toys by storm. They follow the trend of Barbie and other successful dolls by releasing various subgroups of dolls to entice children in to growing their collection of Bratz dolls. The dolls themselves are built around a base group of four friends: Sasha, Cloe, Yasmin and Jade. The four dolls incorporate multiculturalism by representing the African American race (Sasha), the Asian race (Jade) and the Caucasian race (Cloe and Yasmin). Although there are only four base characters, again, much like Barbie did, Bratz has extended the family and created other dolls to add in to the various collections. Currently there are over twenty different lines of Bratz dolls; however, today we focus on the Bratz Lil’ Angelz doll Yasmin.

The Lil’ Angelz dolls each come with their own outfit. There are currently two types of Lil’ Angelz doll on the market, both are collectible; however, one of the packages comes with one doll and two pets and the other package comes with one doll and only one pet. The Yasmin doll I purchased came with two pets, a turtle and a dog. All of the dolls and the pets are collectible and on http://bratzLilangelz.com you can find a compiled list of all of the collectible parts of the Lil’ Angelz series…but be warned there are a lot and they are still producing more. This site also provides you with a count down until the release of the next series of Lil’ Angelz dolls. There are currently 235 pieces to the Lil’ Angelz collectibles series.

The Lil’ Angelz dolls themselves will fit in the palm of your hand and the Lil’ Angelz petz are just a tad smaller. The dolls are made of a softer plastic (not hard enough to crack and soft enough to pose). The dolls are also poseable and come dressed in a small outfit. The petz are around the size of the dolls body (sans legs) and have bobble heads. Each pet seems to come dressed with it’s own accessory as the dog has a pearl necklace and bows in her hair and the turtle has a heart necklace and a flower in her hair. The petz are made of the same plastic as the dolls themselves.

Review:

The Bratz Lil’ Angelz dolls only received a rating of 2/5 for a few reasons. Although the toy was a great price (under $5) I have seen many more toys in this price range that provide more entertainment value and less of a choking hazard. The first factor that turned me off the Bratz Lil’ Angelz doll was the very thing that made me pick it up to try it out, a hang tag stating “NEW EASY OPEN PACKAGE.” It could be inferred from this hang tag that this package would be easy to open; however between the tags holding the cardboard backing to the plastic shell front of the packaging and the tabs of tape all over the thing, I can most definitely say that this packaging is not “easy open.” As you can see from the video clip at the bottom of this review things became a tad frustrating when opening this “easy open” package.

Enough on the packaging, let’s get to the important part, the toys. The toys themselves seem to be sturdy enough for the recommended age range; however, the risk of choking is always a concern when smaller toys like the petz that come with Lil Angelz’ dolls are present. A four year old should know better than to put a toy in her mouth but we know four year olds better than that, toys do go in mouths whether we like it or not. Aside from the choking hazard one hangup I have with the entire Bratz dolls is more of the social statement that they make to our children. Children these days are forced to grow up too quickly, they are thrust in to a society where the expectations on them are above and beyond what they were on either you or I. I do not believe four year olds, or even eight year olds for that matter should have it thrust upon them that “pretty girls” wear makeup and expensive sexualized clothes, that they need to be cool to be liked and lastly that they need to be “ditzy” to fit in. This is precisely why I have not recommended this product as a gift even though it is marked as a “hot item.” I suppose my point of view has biased my review of the Bratz Lil’ Angelz doll; however, I also believe that many other mothers and fathers out there carry the same opinions as I do. Don’t get me wrong the Bratz dolls are quality products, they are packaged as advertised (with the exception of the “easy open package”) and will provide your child with entertainment and perhaps allow them to “fit in” with their friends but I believe you can get more bang for your buck with other toys in this price range.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
Toy is portable and trendy as well as collectible.
Ease of Assembly: No assembly required
Price: $4.97
Packaging: Cardboard/plastic combination, packaging is marked as “easy open” but I found this to be simply untrue.
Packaging Opening: Medium / Hard
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
Although small enough to throw, these toys are soft enough and light weight enough that they would not cause any damage or pain.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
Other than package opening there is zero level of frustration with this toy.
Durability: Toy Durability
The toys seem to be made of a durable resilient plastic; however I see potential for arms, legs and heads to come off with rough play. It is also possible that over time the painted features of the toy will become worn; however, this is normal wear and tear.
Educational: Multicultural education by introduction to other racial groups.

Leapfrog Brightlings Matchers

Leapfrog Brightlings Matchers
Leapfrog.com
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 6 Months +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

Brightlings are a group of toys introduced by Leapfrog for infants 6 months+. The Brightlings Matchers are one of the subgroups of the Brightlings toys, the other subgroups include Brightlings Builders, Brightlings Stackers, and Brightlings Dancers. All of the Brightlings are learning toys and each group has a specific targetted development area. The Brightlings Matchers are intended to aid in the development of motor skills and creativity; they also aid in teaching colors, shapes, cause-and-effect and sorting.

Brightlings Matchers come three to a box, as with the other Brightlings toys. Although the shapes are slightly irregular one represents an oval, one a triangle and one a square, the irregularity at the tops and bottoms of each block enable them to stack together in to a column. Each shape comes apart in to two pieces and each half can match up with other halves to make interesting combinations; however, when your child makes the correct combination of halves he will be rewarded with a *ting* sound from the blue square, a swirling motion from the red oval’s clear window, and a flashing light from within the yellow triangle.

Review:

Overall Brightlings Builders are a good toy for an infant especially regarding the developmental aspects of the toy. The packaging, although irrelevant as the age range for this toy is so young, was easy to open and there were no internal ties or twisty ties within the packaging to make them difficult to get out of the packaging. The only “assembly” with the Brightlings Builders is pulling a clear plastic tab from two of the blocks which are clearly marked with “pull me,” in order for the internal mechanisms in those two blocks to connect and allow flashing or spinning (depending on which block) to take place when the correct halves are placed together. The halves of each block are easily pulled apart and put back together and should pose little to no frustration to a young child during play. When all of the halves are connected forming three complete blocks the individual blocks will also stack on top of each other, although the particular shape and “waviness” of the blocks make it difficult to keep the blocks stacked and may cause a little frustration during play. With the exception of the lazy shape of the blocks themselves causing stacking issues I found nothing else to complain about with this particular toy. I like the colors, the shapes and the stimulation they provide and would recommend them, not only as a learning toy for your own child but as a gift for someone elses.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor

Littlest Pet Shop Pet Display and Play Pet Nook
Littlest Pet Shop Pet Display and Play Pet Nook Littlest Pet Shop Pet Display and Play Pet Nook
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 4 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

The Littlest Pet Shop Pet Display and Play Pet Nook Turtle with Surf Shop is a novelty toy, one piece among many in a collectible unit of pet nooks. The Littlest Pet Shop Pet nooks are small panoramas which fit together to create one large “pet shop,” however they only come one to a pack. There are currently six Play Pet Nooks available: a bunny with a grocery store, a cat with a candy shop, a monkey with a gym, a puppy with a vet office, a seahorse with a bathroom and a turtle with a surfshop.

The Play Pet Nooks come in a cardboard backed plastic package, within the package is a small panorama, one prop for the panorama and the pet that came with the panorama. The prop fits in to a custom hole for it within the panorama (on the surfshop panorama there are three holes for the palm tree prop.) There is also a magnet within the pet assumedly to keep the pet within the panorama. The panorama itself is decorated with a large sticker of the background of choice (in this case a surf shop,) which is why this toy is not recommended for water play. The panorama also has small holes in the top and curved scrolls on the side to hook it on to other panoramas and create a larger pet shop theme.

Review:

The packaging was taped together with what seemed like industrial strength tape, this did serve the purpose of keeping the toys in the packaging but it also served the purpose of keeping me out and as a result upon opening the packaging was torn. Within the packaging is a booklet of other Littlest Pet Shop products along with a coupon code for 10% off Littlest Pet Shop products online…be prepared, there are a LOT of different pets available. The toys themselves are encased in a plastic shell and attached with some type of flimsy rubber band, this can be removed without using scissors but it may not be an easy feat for a child so I recommend that you remove the toys from packaging yourself.

Although I think the Littlest Pet Shop toys are a cute concept I find them to be cheap toys with limited wow factor. The collectible aspect of these toys adds some value as a childrens toy and the fact that the individual pet “nooks” are able to be joined to other individual pet “nooks” makes this toy a neat concept but still it’s not enough to convince me it’s worth its money. The pet “nook” itself is pretty tough however the sticker which forms the backdrop can be peeled away or destroyed in exposure to water so keep that in mind. The prop for the “nook” (in this case a palm tree) is made of softer plastic and is bendable which is great, had it been made from harder plastic it would be snapped within the first five minutes of play. The prop itself slots in to the “nook” in a shallow hole which barely holds the prop upright and one bump with the hand and your prop will come out of the hole and fall down increasing the frustration factor. Now the pet itself has a moveable head and is about the width of two adult fingers. The pet comes with a magnet, this causes the pet to stick to various things that magnets should stick to; however, I have yet to find a way to stick it to the pet “nook.” Being that the pet doesn’t stick to the pet “nook,” at least not in the toy I purchased, I don’t quite see the point in putting a magnet in the pet. Since there is no magnet within the “nook” to connect with the magnet within the pet once set up as a “scene” the pet will move around quite a bit. While this may not be such a problem with a single pet nook as your child will want to play with the pet, should your child have a few pet nooks and attach them together pets will begin toppling out of their nooks and this can definitely add to the frustration factor for your child.

All in all I’m not convinced this toy is a great investment, I would say if your child is looking at the Littlest Pet Shop line of toys and really has to have one stick with the solo pets. The pricetag on the solo pets runs around $1.99 a piece and there are many to collect but as with all small toys I remind you of the potential of a choking hazard!

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
Imagination and collectibility as well as lack of need for construction make this a fun toy; however, the instability of the pieces as a whole unit gives this toy a 2/5
Ease of Assembly: Easy to put together since there are few pieces.
Price: $4.49
Packaging: Plastic shell with cardboard backing
Packaging Opening: Medium difficulty because of the excessive tape holding the plastic shell to the cardboard backing.
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
The pieces of this toy could be thrown; however should they be launched there is little to no chance of being hurt or them causing damage.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
With a prop that falls out of its place regularly with the slightest touch and a pet that doesn’t attach to it’s “nook” at all I give this toy a 3/5 on the frustration factor.
Durability: Toy Durability
The toy has potential to last; however, I believe after a while the sticker background will wear off and the prop will become lost, the pet could also become lost because of the size of it.
Educational: None.
