Description:

The Lego Terrain Crusher Tiny Turbos car kit comes in a re-usable plastic casing shaped like a tire with a large sticker wrapped around it. The packaging itself is enticing to any child, not just a Lego lover; however, be warned that the packaging and the actual product itself looks MUCH bigger in online stores than it actually is. The complete toy, including packaging is about the size of the average adult woman’s hand. The top of the tire shaped case just pops off after breaking the seal of the wrap around sticker and the Lego pieces are inside a plastic bag for “safe keeping.” The Lego set comes with a sheet of stickers, just enough pieces to construct the car itself (so make sure you don’t lose any pieces!) and a sheet of instructions.

The sheet of instructions is readable enough to create a car but as an adult woman it took me a couple of tries to get the car completed as per the instructions. Since the instructions show groups of pieces as steps instead of piece by piece instructions it is a little more difficult than one might think to contruct the actual car featured on the packaging; however, it is possible after a little extra frustration of extra pieces and starting over a couple of times. Once the car is completed as per instructions the sticker sheet provided gives your child the opportunity to decorated their very own Terrain Crusher to look just like the one on the packaging or to their own specifications.

Lego Tiny Turbos has a few models of vehicles available including the 8130 Terrain Crusher, the 8131 Raceway Rider, the 8132 Night Driver, the 8133 Rally Runner, the 8134 Night Crusher, the 8135 Bridge Chase, the 8147 Bullet Run, and the 8681 Tuner Garage. These are the Tiny Turbo vehicles and vehicle sets available but there are also other classifications of Lego vehicle sets available including the Power Racers and the Ferrari sets.

Review:

The Lego Terrain Crusher Tiny Turbos vehicle set was mildly dissapointing but not so much so that I wouldn’t recommend it to friends. The primary disappointment of the set was the size, although I realize that Lego are small building bricks, from the size of the set featured on KB Toys website I expected a much larger set. The actual set (the size of my hand) contains just enough bricks to complete the car on the packaging and no more which was also mildly disappointing but again not largely so.

After taking the pieces of lego from the packaging and arranging them so I could see which pieces were which I realized that the actual construction of the car featured on the packaging was not going to be as easy as I assumed it should be. I mean honestly, how hard can it be to contruct a car out of Lego? I pull out the instructions provided and realize that the instructions themselves consist of groups of pieces. For example the first step includes building the base of the car, it does not show exactly which pieces to use but you are left to guess which pieces look right and your confirmation only comes when the final result of your step one looks identical to the final result of the instructions step one. Although this is a slight inconvenience it is not hard enough to make the toy one that I would not recommend.

Lego have always been a huge favorite of mine when it comes to children’s toys, I had Lego growing up as did my younger brothers and as will my own children when the day comes. Lego are the perfect toy for any child because they encourage learning and socializing as well as imaginative play which is ALWAYS a plus with any toy. I not only love the educational and imaginative factors of Lego though, I love that it is a toy that you can build on. Lego is a toy that can be collected and built upon for years as well as passed down from generation to generation and they continue to still be compatible with each other even as the years pass.

As for the Terrain Crusher Lego set, while I don’t highly recommend it as a Lego playset you could do a lot worse for yourself as far as toy choices go. I have seen other Lego sets that I would be more apt to purchase by personal choice, such as the themed playsets or the movie inspired sets (think Star Wars,) but if your child has his or her heart set on the Tiny Turbos vehicle sets, for the price I wouldn’t fight it. The cost is justifiable for a durable toy which offers hours of entertainment and can also be broken down to individual pieces that are compatible with other Lego sets and collections.

Transformers Movie Legends Bumblebee

Transformers Movie Legends Bumblebee
Transformers Movie Legends Bumblebee Transformers Movie Legends Bumblebee
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 5 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

The Transformers movie legends action figures come in a plastic shell packaging on a cardboard backing. The back of the packaging includes “transforming” instructions for the figure as well as statistics for each individual transformer with vitals such as “strength” and “skill” which enables different movie legends Transformers to be pitted against each other in play. The packaging is easy to open and the toy runs around $3.99. There are a variety of the movie legends figures available currently including: Jazz, Ratchet, Barricade, Blackout, Bumblebee, Megatron, and Starscream. All of these figures run at the same price; however, as they become harder to find in stores and online you will notice that certain stores (both reputable and not so reputable stores) will bump up the price on certain figures and not others. The original Habro website; however, always charges the same price for all of their figures but they do frequently run out of stock and seem to be running at a constant backlog.

The Movie Legends Transformers are one of the most readily available of the Transformers action figures as opposed to the Movie Deluxe figures which are not as easily found. The Movie Legends figures are also one of the cheapest Transformer toys on the market at a cost under $5 each, which aids children in completing a collection with their own pocket money or aids in parents who are seeking complete collections for their children. The actual figures are approximately as long as the average woman’s middle finger (excuse the reference, but it is easier to put things in perspective.) The figures are also extremely lightweight and plastic as opposed to various diecast Transformers figures on the market. Each figure available transforms from one vehicle to one Transformer robot figure.

Review:

The toy packaging was simple enough to open and the toy itself easy enough to extricate from the twist ties holding it inside the packaging but honestly that was the most fun part of the Movie Legends Transformer figure. The plastic figure not only feels cheap but it is so cheaply made that it literally fell apart in the first 4 minutes and 4 seconds of me “transforming” it. While the movie legends toys do offer a cheap alternative for parents who can’t afford the full blown Transformers figures for their kids this Christmas, I don’t recommend spending the $3.99 on them.

The toy fits the bill as far as looking like a Transformer, the colors are perfect and as long as your child doesn’t actually want to transform the figure you should be safe; however, once the transforming action starts you stand a pretty high chance of your Transformer of choice losing a limb or two. Pieces come off easily and while they can be replaced on to the figure the replacing of limbs is frustrating and a little harder than it was to accidentally remove the limb in the first place. Not only is the transformation factor a risky one when it comes to limb loss, but it is a frustrating one as well. Instead of a slide and lock system that completes smoothly the transformation process consists more of a cracking, snapping frustrating sequence of curse words and pinched fingers. The pieces fit together loosely and don’t stick in place creating a slumped mess of semi-Transformer.

I am sad to say that aside from the visual of the toy when it is untouched, the Transformers Movie Legends toy falls so far from my expectations of such a popular toy that it left me speechless. As a childhood fan of the old school Transformers action figures I had such high expectations for the newly released figures and while the newer released larger scaled action figures may meet or exceed those expectations these small scale Movie Legends figures do not. I could not recommend these figures to anyone other than a collector who will leave them in the boxes, as for your children? Move on and try another action figure with more to give and don’t waste your money on these.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
A frustrating toy that falls far from the mark.
Ease of Assembly: No assembly required
Price: $3.99
Packaging: A plastic shell on a cardboard backing and twist ties holding the toy inside the packaging.
Packaging Opening: Easy.
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
Easily thrown and just hard enough to cause pain when hit, not as likely to damage walls etc.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
An extremely frustrating toy, likely to break apart and difficult to “transform” and maintain in a “transformed” state.
Durability: Toy Durability
Durable in that it is made of a hard plastic; however, pieces break off easily so while the pieces of this toy may be durable, the toy itself is not.
Educational: Motor Skill Development and Coordination
Cognitive Development
Where I found it: ToysRUs

Play-Doh Pastel Colors 4-Pack
Play-Doh Pastel Colors 4-Pack Play-Doh Pastel Colors 4-Pack
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 2 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

The Play-doh 4-Packs come with four pots of colored doh, each pot contains 5-ounces of Play-Doh (a little more than a handful.) The pots are resealable and reusable and are made from plastic hard yet flexible enough to withstand being dropped. The four pots are held together with a cardboard sleeve packaging which is both easy and quick to remove making for easy and fast playtime.

The play-doh four packs of doh come in a variety of colors: Pastels (orange, yellow, teal, lilac), Classic Colors (turquoise, red, white and yellow), Favorite Colors (magenta, aquamarine, purple and pink), and Neon Colors (magenta, green, orange and pink) all priced at $1.99. The Play-Doh pots can also be purchased in two-packs for $0.99, Play-Doh single softpack assortments for $1.99, Play-Doh Party Packs (10 smaller pots) for $2.99, Halloween Trick or Treat packs (20 small pots) for $3.99, Play-Doh cases (10 pots) for $4.99, and the Play-Doh 50th birthday set of 50 Play-Doh pots for $12.99. Play-Doh also carries a variety of tools and play sets to go with the Doh.

Play-Doh colors can also be mixed together to create various other colors which not only gives children the opportunity to create colors that are not sold but also gives them a chance to learn about color mixing.

Review:

I am a huge fan of Play-Doh modeling clay for many reasons: the non-toxicity of the clay, the imaginative uses of the clay, the affordability of the clay and finally the educational value of the clay. The cost is one of the primary reasons that I chose to review Play-Doh clay. So many parents these days are forced on to tighter and tighter budgets so that it becomes harder to purchase the more costly toys, and when they look for more affordable toys they are often duped in to buying cheap toys that don’t last. Play-Doh is an affordable toy that lasts a considerably long time as long as it is sealed in to the pots provided for storage.

For years since it’s accidental creation Play-doh has been an affordable toy that parents and families turn to for entertainment. I recommend this “toy” which is more of a craft than anything, to any parents out there who are looking for a toy which offers more than sitting in front of a television set. I love the variety of colors available and although I do love the smaller pot packs of Play-Doh I highly recommend the 50th birthday pack, which comes with fifty pots of Play-Doh, for the money.

The only things I don’t care for with Play-Doh’s doh is that it is not waterproof; however, that is expected with the composition of the clay. I also do not like that the toy is not a travel toy, but again this is not something that can be helped.

As far as Play-Doh goes, even though it is not considered a “hot toy” it is a fun toy that I recommend for gift giving as well as for craft and playtime at home. And for those of you who worry about the composition, you can be rest assured that Play-Doh is non-toxic; however, if you have a child with wheat allergies Play-Doh is not the toy for your household as it does contain wheat products.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
A fun toy which stimulates imaginative play and creativity.
Ease of Assembly: No assembly required
Price: $1.99
Packaging: A cardboard sleeve holding the four plastic pots together.
Packaging Opening: Easy.
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
Easily thrown but not hard enough to hurt or damage when they strike.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
There is limited to no frustration factor with this toy.
Durability: Toy Durability
Unfortunately Play-Doh is extremely succeptible to the elements of childhood which does not make it extremely durable, however, it will last a reasonable amount of time if kept in pots when out of use.
Educational: Color mixing
Sensory Stimulation
Social Interaction
Cognitive Development
Where I found it: ToysRUs

Little People Lil’ Dino Brontosaurus

by admin on November 19, 2007 in Archived Reviews

Lil' Dino Brontosaurus
Lil' Dino Brontosaurus Fisher-Price.com
Overall Rating: Overall Toy Rating
Recommended Age Group: 3 years +
Country of Manufacture: China

Description:

The Lil’ People Lil’ Dino Brontosaurus comes in an open cardboard packaging making it easy to touch the toy and try it out in the store prior to purchase. The individual pieces of the toy are attached to the card board backing with twist ties covered in tape making it hard to pull them out for play; however it also makes them hard for people to take out of packaging in stores. The brontosaurus playset comes with one large brontosaurus, one small brontosaurus with egg, one caveboy and one food source which for the brontosaurus set is a leaf filled with blueberries. The baby brontosaurus can be taken out of his dino egg and placed back in at anytime and there is a small hole in the side of the egg that lets your child peek in at the baby brontosaurus when he is inside the egg. The mother brontosaurus has a moveable neck, it moves up and down but not side to side. The baby brontosaurus’ neck does not move.

The Lil’ Dino sets come in three varieties: the brontosaurus (which I got,) the triceratops (which comes with a cave girl and some type of greenery for food,) and the T-Rex (which comes with a cave boy/girl (I can’t tell which) and a bucket of bones for food.) Each of the sets comes with the mother and baby dino (in an egg) as well. The cost of the individual playsets is $10.99 (unless you find it on sale like I did for $9.96 at Walmart.) If you prefer you can pick up the Lil Dino Giftset which comes with the brontosaurus mom, baby, egg and foodsource, the triceratops mom, baby, egg and foodsource, the T-rex mom, baby, egg and foodsource and lastly one cave person (not three as you might expect.) The cost on the gift pack is $24.99. There are various other Little People playsets; however, to date there are only three Lil’ Dino sets.

The eggs for each set are made from thin but hard plastic and the “door” slides open and closed easily. The mother dino’s are made from hard plastic which is soft enough to chew on for younger children and hard enough to be durable. The caveboy/girl is also made of the same material as the mother dino. The food, in this case blueberries on a leaf, are made from hard plastic which is not as toddler mouth friendly as the other pieces in this set.

Review:

The Lil’ Dino’s Brontosaurus playset comes in an open front cardboard packaging and although I really hate that the toys are tied in with twist ties (I cannot stand twist ties, they’re just too intricate to untwist) I do like that they’re in an open packaging. Open packaging offers you the chance to see, play and examine the toy prior to purchase which I feel is important especially when you like to be able to see exactly what you’re getting for your money as I do. The only drawback to this open packaging is that everyone else can also play with and examine the toy so I do advise when you get the toy home and unpackaged to wipe everything down with antibacterial cleaner. The box itself it’s slightly difficult to open especially when you combine the twist ties that are taped at the back but with a pair of scissors anything is possible.

I like that the toy set comes with so many pieces that fit together well enough to create an entire habitat instead of just one or two pieces. With the caveboy, mother and baby dinosaur as well as the egg and food source it is easier for children to make believe when playing with this toy. The toys themselves are also pretty impressive as long as we discount the throwability factor, since all pieces are extremely “launchable” and extremely painful when they make contact with their target. The material the toys are created from is durable enough for children who feel the need to chew and mouth their toys as well as waterproof for children who like to have tub time with toys. I am extremely impressed with the durability of the toys as they would stand up well not just to bathtime but also to sandbox play and are large enough to stand up to car travel without getting lost.

The biggest gripe I have about the Lil’ Dino’s set aside from the twist ties on the packaging is the loose joint on the mother dino’s neck. After a while of playing the hinge on the mother dino’s neck becomes a little too loose and you find her head will flop down unannounced which is extremely frustrating especially when the rest of the playset is in the strike zone and topples over. The loose neck joint; however, is the only thing I really have to gripe about in this toy. I love the Lil’ People toys and always have, they are durable, affordable and encourage imaginative play.

Breakdown Toy Rating:
Fun Factor: Toy Fun Factor
A fun set which comes with enough pieces to compliment imaginary play.
Ease of Assembly: No assembly required
Price: $10.99 (Mine was $9.96 on sale at Walmart)
Packaging: Open front cardboard with twist ties holding in toys
Packaging Opening: Medium, twist ties are tightly wound and covered with thick tape.
Noise Factor: Toy Noise Factor
No potential for noise other than the imagination of your child
Launch Factor: Toy Launch Factor
Easily thrown and hard enough to hurt or damage when they strike.
Frustration Factor: Toy Frustration Factor
The only frustration is the mother dino’s neck joint becoming loose.
Durability: Toy Durability
Strong enough to be durable even under toddler teeth.
Educational: Egg hatching / life processes
Dinosaur Species
Multicultural awareness
Where I found it: Walmart
